Inspired by her grandfather's emphasis on living a life with a clear purpose and her mother's activism, Robinson's path was shaped by a pivotal encounter with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who urged her to "do something for the people." This guiding principle led her to pursue her education, face workplace racism, and ultimately found The Houston Sun newspaper to tell the stories of her community. Her life's work is defined by a belief in being a "tool" for others and she humbly states that her greatest accomplishments are being a good wife and mother.

Dorris Ellis Robinson is a dedicated activist and founder of The Houston Sun newspaper. Raised in Mississippi under the influence of her activist mother and a grandfather who instilled the importance of purpose, she dedicated her life to serving her community. A pivotal meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. solidified her mission, leading her to attend the University of Illinois and later establish The Houston Sun to provide a platform for her community's stories. Guided by her unwavering purpose, Robinson has dedicated her life to being a "tool" for building a better world, while always prioritizing her family.
